BCRF congratulates Dr. Daniel Hayes on becoming the next president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).  Founded in 1964, ASCO is one of the most influential professional organizations dedicated to clinical oncology and the largest of its kind with more than 35,000 members around the globe.

One of BCRF’s very first grantees, Dr. Hayes is Clinical Director of the Breast Oncology Program and the Stuart B. Padnos Professor of Breast Cancer Research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. He becomes ASCO president elect on June 1, 2015, kicking off his three-year appointment, and then will serve as president from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017.

“I’m honored to be elected incoming president of ASCO, which has had such a major influence on my professional career,” Hayes said.

His ASCO term will focus on new strategies for health care reform, personalized cancer care, the development of CancerLinQ, ASCO’s health information technology platform, and other efforts to improve quality and value in cancer care, and reducing disparities in cancer treatment throughout the world.

“I look forward to working with ASCO leadership and staff on these critical initiatives within the oncology community. ASCO is uniquely positioned to tackle these issues head-on, and I look forward to being part of this exciting time in the life of the society.”

Dr. Hayes is the eighth BCRF grantee to hold this esteemed honor. Our scientific leaders Dr. Larry Norton and Dr. Clifford Hudis also served as president of ASCO as well as grantees Drs. Nancy Davidson, Gabriel Hortobagyi, Richard Schilsky, George Sledge, Jr. and Sandra Swain.
