The award recognizes BCRF’s efforts to improve mental and physical health in women worldwide.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) has been announced as one of more than 80 organizations worldwide selected as awardees of Action for Women’s Health, a $250 million global open call funded by Pivotal and managed by Lever for Change, supporting organizations working to improve women’s mental and physical health worldwide. This award from Action for Women’s Health will advance BCRF’s mission to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research.
Although women make up half of the world’s population, they face inequities in nearly every aspect of their health. Women’s health remains chronically underfunded and under-researched, and even when resources and solutions exist, they often fail to reach the women who need them most.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer and is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women globally. With an alarming trend of increasing incidence around the world, most steeply in younger women under the age of 50, breast cancer is a central issue in women’s health. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is the largest private funder of breast cancer research worldwide.
“We are honored to be recognized by Action for Women’s Health for our commitment to advancing women’s health through science,” said Donna McKay, President and CEO of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “This award reaffirms that investing in women’s health research—particularly in breast cancer—is essential to achieving health equity worldwide. We are deeply grateful for this partnership and the opportunity to drive transformative change for women everywhere.”
Over 4,000 organizations from 119 countries applied to the open call, each offering unique solutions to improve women’s health across the lifespan. Following a rigorous peer and expert review process, 80+ organizations were awarded between $1 million and $5 million in funding, many of which have historically lacked access to major funding streams.
Action for Women’s Health is funded by Pivotal, a group of impact organizations founded by Melinda French Gates, and managed by Lever for Change, an organization with a track record of identifying bold ideas to solve the world’s most pressing problems.
