Hormone receptors (HR) are proteins that may be present on the surface of or inside cells and bind to certain hormones. Breast cancer cells that have hormone receptors are described as hormone receptor–positive and rely on hormones to grow. The two types of hormone receptors that may be present in or on breast cancer cells are estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors.
