BCRF Appoints Dr. Judy E. Garber As New Scientific Advisory Board Chairman

By BCRF | May 23, 2016

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has appointed Judy E. Garber, MD, MPH, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, as its new Scientific Advisory Board Chairman. Effective this June, Garber succeeds Clifford A. Hudis, MD, FACP, who has been named the next Chief Executive Officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

An internationally recognized leader in clinical and translational research on breast cancer, Dr. Garber has been instrumental in shaping BCRF’s research portfolio. She has served as a member of BCRF’s Scientific Advisory Board since 2008 and as a BCRF grantee since 2001. Dr. Garber is the Director of the Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“In addition to her exceptional academic and intellectual achievements, throughout her career Judy has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to patients, their families and friends and the highest humanistic goals of medicine,” said Dr. Larry Norton, Medical Director of the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and BCRF Scientific Director. “This marriage of scientific acumen and deep caring about people is what BCRF is all about. We are delighted that Judy has graciously accepted the responsibilities of her new role at BCRF and look forward to her insights and leadership.”

Dr. Garber is a past president of the American Association for Cancer Research, an elected member of the Institute of Medicine, and was appointed by President Obama to serve on the National Cancer Advisory Board. She received a M.D. and M.P.H. from Yale University School of Medicine.

BCRF’s Scientific Advisory Board expressed their gratitude for Dr. Hudis’ expertise and contributions while serving as chairman for almost a decade. Dr. Hudis has propelled BCRF’s mission in funding the trailblazers and game changers in breast cancer research.

“During his time as chairman, Dr. Hudis has taken the foundation to a new level. He has been a great leader at BCRF and I’m honored to succeed him in this role,” said Dr. Garber. “I look forward to working with Dr. Norton and BCRF’s Scientific Advisory Board to charter a path forward as we champion BCRF’s mission to advance the world’s most promising scientific research to prevent and cure breast cancer.”
