Androgens are hormones involved in male and female sexual development. Testosterone is one of them. While both men and women have testosterone, men have more of it. Androgen receptors are proteins that help mediate the activity of these hormones, and while their exact role in breast cancer development is unclear, researchers think these receptors may be present in some triple-negative breast cancers, making them potentially treatable with anti-androgen receptor therapies.
