Recurrence is a term that is used when cancer comes back after treatment. It may be either a local recurrence (in the same area as the original), regional recurrence (in the lymph nodes or tissues near the breast), or distant recurrence (in other organs or tissues far from the original site). One-third of women will experience a recurrence in their lifetime, so finding ways to prevent recurrence is an important area of study in breast cancer research.
