Women who have undergone surgery to remove one or both breasts to treat or prevent breast cancer may have the option of rebuilding their breast(s)—a process called breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction can be accomplished using artificial implants or tissue from another part of the body (called autologous tissue reconstruction). Your physician may recommend either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction, depending on the type of breast cancer you have and whether you’ll be undergoing radiation therapy.
