Metastasis occurs when a cancer cell leaves the tissue from which it originated and forms a new tumor in a different organ. When breast cancer spreads to the brain, known as brain metastasis, few treatment options exist.

HER2-positive breast cancer represents about 25 percent of all breast cancers. Once a deadly disease with few treatment options, early stage HER2-positive breast cancer is now a treatable disease with a good prognosis for many patients.

Estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer is the most common form of the disease accounting for about 70 percent of all breast cancers. These tumors require the hormone estrogen to grow.


Thanks to research, we know breast cancer is not one but many diseases. At the molecular level, research has proven that a cancerous tumor is also comprised of different types of cells. These variations have serious implications for patients.
